Courts and judges make up the judicial branch. There are district courts, court of appeals, and the supreme court. Members of the judicial branch are appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. The amount of federal judges is determined by the senate. The only way federal judges can be removed is through impeachment by the house of representatives and conviction by the senate. There is no time restriction on their term, they serve until retirement, death or impeachment. They have the single and only power to interpret and determine the constitutionality of laws and apply them to cases. The supreme court is the highest court in the land and its judges are also nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate. The supreme court usually does not hold trials; instead it interprets the meaning of laws to a specific case and decides how that law should be applied.

Congress can impeach the judges and remove them from office and the executive can decide not to nominate a judge.

The judiciary interprets the meanings of laws, applies laws to individual cases, and decides the constitutionality of the laws to a specific case.

The power of the judiciary has evolved over the years because the judiciary branch used to always adhere directly to the constitution and make decisions based on the exact interpretation of the constitution. However, over the years, the judicial branch has become more lenient and is more willing to bend the constitution and change laws in certain cases/issues.

Political parties affect the judiciary branch because political parties influence the presidents decision when appointing judges. Different judges being in favor of different political parties may affect the outcome of a court decision.

Interest groups work to influence the courts in many ways. Interest groups try to affect decisions in the court through the inside game of lobbying. Lobbyists present arguments in favor of a certain issue in order to influence decisions of the court which is known as amicus curiae.

The media is very important in the judiciary branch because it gives the public some access to what is happening in the judiciary. The media provides the people with audio recordings and other things on the internet that give the people updates on what is occurring. The media can defintley affect the outcome of certain judicial decisions.

The judiciary sets a model for state and local governments. Serious cases from the state and local governments can be sent up to the supreme court in order for a deeper insight of the case and taking the matter in a more serious view. The judiciary has to make sure state and coal governments are properly interpreting the constitution in the court. Also if a precedent is set in the supreme court, state and local governments must follow the same decision based on that precedent in a previous case.
